History of Rosehill
Cemetery
Eaton Rapids’ first cemetery was located west
of Springbrook in what is today Howe Memorial Field. Because of periodic
flooding
and its proximity to the business district, the cemetery
was moved in the early 1870s.
In 1874, a contract was let to remove the remains of over
400 people from the old burial grounds and have them reinterned
to the present Rosehill Cemetery located on West Street.
As the years passed, more land was acquired. The cemetery
now contains 80 acres and is the major cemetery in the Eaton
Rapids region.
In 1921, a 168-crypt mausoleum was added. One section of
the cemetery has been set aside for the facility needs of
Eaton Rapids-located Veterans of Foreign Wars Home for Children.
The history of the Eaton Rapids area is recorded on the
gravestones of Rosehill Cemetery. Many of the area’s
pioneers are buried here, as well as Veterans from every
war from as early as the war of 1812.
