History of Eaton Rapids Public Library
According to W. Scott Munn’s book, “The only Eaton Rapids
on Earth”, the Eaton Rapids Public Library has a historic background
dating back to February 18, 1876 when a group of young people met
to organize a Literary and Social Club. Their main objective was
to establish a reading room and library.
The club called itself the Philorhetorian League and solicited books
from the community with which to start a library. According to Mr.
Munn, A. Harwood operated the early library from his newsroom in
the building now owned by the Grange. Some residents recall that
it was located in the rear of the early variety store operated by
Herb Boise. At first, five cents a week was charged to use the books.
In September 1899, a building was purchased on the northeast corner
of Main and Knight Streets and the books were installed there. In
1934, the library was moved to the site of the City building. In
1968, the library was moved to its present location at 220 S. Main
Street. From 1968 to late 2002, the library rented the building from
the Oddfellows. The City purchased the building in December 2002.
